On Sunday the Knights lost a 1-0 heartbreaker at home in the final minute. Melissa Smith was in position to handle a deflected shot off of UCF’s Aline Reis before sending her own shot into the corner of the net.

Sports fans had little trouble finding something to do with their time on Friday. In action were the Orlando Magic, Florida Tuskers, UCF football and women’s soccer, Rollins men’s soccer, and prep football games.

With another regular season C-USA title and No. 1 seed already wrapped up for this week’s tournament, the UCF Knights women’s soccer will attempt to win the one crown that truly matters at the UCF Soccer Complex.

The UCF women’s soccer team clocked in at No. 14 in the first NCAA Ratings Percentage Index standings this week while a UCF men’s soccer midfielder earned conference and national recognition.

The latest Soccer America top-25 poll has the UCF women’s soccer team at No. 18 after notching home wins over C-USA opponents East Carolina and Marshall. UCF is also No. 25 in the new National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll.

In 30 years of collegiate competition, including stints in two different conferences, there hasn’t been a whole lot of time for the women’s soccer program at UCF to develop too many meaningful rivalries. C-USA play begins this weekend.

Since dropping the opening match of the 2010 season against Florida, the UCF women’s soccer team has won three in a row, including a close 1-0 double overtime contest at USF on Friday. The Knights also recently defeated San Diego State and VCU.

The largest crowd in UCF Soccer Complex history turned out for a Top-25 showdown between the No. 25 UCF women’s team and No. 11 Florida Gators on Sunday. There were an announced 2,141 fans on hand, breaking the previous mark of 1,142 set last season against FSU.

The biggest game of the year for the UCF women’s soccer team happens to be its opener of the season. This Sunday at UCF Soccer Complex the No. 25 Knights host No. 11 Florida at 7 p.m. in the first meeting between the teams since 2008. The game can also be seen on Fox Sports Florida.
