Looking to add a little depth to its backcourt, the Orlando Magic signed free agent guard Chris Duhon last week while the team's pro summer league squad finished just 1-4 after Patrick Ewing and the team hosted opposing teams at RDV Sportsplex.

Looking to add a little depth to its backcourt, the Orlando Magic signed free agent guard Chris Duhon last week while the team’s pro summer league squad hosted a handful games at RDV Sportsplex.

“Chris (Duhon) provides depth, leadership and stability to our backcourt,” said Magic General Manager Otis Smith. “He takes care of the basketball, defends well and can hit the open shot. We’re very happy to add Chris to our team.”

Duhon (6’1, 190) played in 67 games - making 59 starts - last season with the New York Knicks. He averaged 7.4 points, 5.6 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 30.9 minutes per game. Duhon led the Knicks in assists and was tied for fifth in the NBA in assists-to-turnover ratio at 378-110 while leading the team in scoring twice and in assists in 38 different games. He scored in double figures 23 times, including a season-high 25 points on Dec. 4 on the road against Atlanta, and also recorded 10-plus assists four times.

Duhon was originally selected in the second round (No. 38 overall) by the Chicago Bulls in the 2004 NBA Draft. He has appeared in 446 career NBA regular season games, averaging 7.7 points, 5.1 assists and 2.6 rebounds in 8.5 minutes per game while shooting .362 (553-1,526) from three-point range and .797 (554-695) from the free throw line.

- Pro Summer League -

Led by Patrick Ewing on the bench, the Orlando Magic finished with just a 1-4 mark last week at the 2010 AirTran Airways Pro Summer League. Oklahoma City led the way with a 4-1 record while Charlotte, Indiana, Utah and New Jersey each ended the week with 3-2 marks.

Philadelphia 76ers guard Jrue Holiday paced all scorers with 19.3 points per game and was named to the All-Summer League First Team at the conclusion of the five-day event. The New Jersey Nets had two recipients on the First Team in guard/forward Terrence Williams (18.8 ppg, 5.0 apg) and forward Damion James (18.8 ppg, 5.3 rpg), while Boston forward Luke Harangody (16.6 ppg, 6.8 rpg) and Oklahoma City center BJ Mullens (16.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg) were also honored.

The All-Summer League Second Team consisted of Indiana Pacers center Magnum Rolle, Charlotte Bobcats guard Gerald Henderson, Philadelphia 76ers guard Jodie Meeks, Oklahoma City guard James Harden and Bobcats forward Derrick Brown.

Honorable Mention honors went to Indiana’s Lance Stephenson, Josh McRoberts and Paul George, Utah’s Kosta Koufos and Gordon Hayward, Boston’s Jaycee Carroll, Oklahoma City’s Eric Maynor and Kyle Weaver and Orlando’s Joe Crawford, Paul Davis and Patrick Ewing, Jr.

The Magic took University of Kentucky center Daniel Orton in the first round with the 29th overall pick and University of Connecticut forward Stanley Robinson in the second round at No. 59 overall.

Although Orton (6’10”, 255 lbs) played in all 38 games during his freshman season at Kentucky, after missing most of his senior season in high school with a knee injury, he played sparingly for the Wildcats. Orton averaged 3.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.39 blocks in 13.4 minutes per game for a team that reached the NCAA Elite Eight. He blocked two or more shots in a game 16 times last season and blocked four shots in a game four times.

Orton scored in double-figures twice as a freshman – 14 points against Rider on Nov. 21 and 10 points against Hartford on Dec. 29 – and grabbed a season-high nine rebounds Jan. 12 on the road against Florida.

What’s inside – The Orlando Magic show off a new logo and host youth basketball camps throughout the area… Former UCF quarterback Daunte Culpepper returns to Citrus Bowl with former pro and college coaches… UCF track and field team gets first Outdoor All-American… The boys and girls athletic programs at Winter Park High School combined to dominate the 2009-10 FHSAA calender year.

Welcome to this edition of Orlando Sports Central Highlights…

– Orlando Magic Get New Look –

Fans will either grow to love it or hate it. Either way, the Orlando Magic will sport at bit of a new look this fall when they open the new Amway Center.

From the Magic: The new logo incorporates the Magic’s current jersey wordmark, giving a more integrated look. It also continues the team’s colors with the Magic blue, Magic black and Magic silver. The updated look includes the team’s current secondary logo with the iconic star ball for a smooth transition from old to new, building on the heritage and history of the Magic from its birth in 1989.

“This new logo signifies the beginning of a new era of excellence for the Orlando Magic and our fans,” said Magic Chief Operating Officer Alex Martins. “We are excited about where our team is and the direction we are headed as we build on the legend already created and look forward to what the future holds.”

– UCF’s Culpepper Back In Action –

If all goes well between now and then, former UCF quarterback Daunte Culpepper will be back in the Florida Citrus Bowl on Thursday, Oct. 21 with his new football team, the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League. The Mountain Lions will be in Orlando as visitors of the Florida Tuskers.

The 1998 All-American and Sammy Baugh Trophy recipient has reunited with two of his former coaches. Culpepper’s first NFL head coach, Dennis Green, is entering his second season, as is offensive coordinator Mike Kruczek, who coached him as a Golden Knight.

Green selected Culpepper with the 11th pick in the 1999 NFL Draft. After three trips to the Pro Bowl while with the Minnesota Vikings, he later wound up floating between the Miami Dolphins, Oakland Raiders and Detroit Lions.

Following 95 career NFL starts with 23,208 passing yards, 146 touchdowns and 101 interceptions, his desire to continue playing the game of football prompted the reunion.

“When the opportunity came for me to sign with the UFL and play for coach Green in Sacramento I could not resist,” said Culpepper.

He’s also looking forward to teaming back up with Kruczek, whose offense helped Culpepper become just the third player in NCAA history to pass for more than 10,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 in a career. As a Knight, Culpepper passed for 11,412 career yards with 84 touchdowns.

After being named the starter in Minnesota in 2000, he led the Vikings to a 7-0 mark during a season that ended in an NFC Championship Game loss to the New York Giants, who were coached by Las Vegas Locos Head Coach Jim Fassel.

– UCF’s Coward An Outdoor All-American –

Of the three UCF track and field athletes competing at nationals this past weekend, it was sophomore Jackie Coward who came away with the program’s best-ever showing.

Coward became the first Knight to earn NCAA Outdoor All-American honors when she qualified fourth for the 100-meter hurdles at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. After clocking in at 13.04 seconds to qualify, she ran that same time in the finals for fifth place overall. Virginia Tech’s Queen Quedith Harrison won the title at 12.67.

By advancing to the championship stage, Coward became a two-time All-American. She previously advanced to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Sophomore Sheila Paul (100-meter dash) and freshman Sonnisha Williams (long jump) also competed on the campus of the University of Oregon but did not advance to championship contention.

– Winter Park FHSAA All-Sports Champs –

Continuing its tradition of winning, the boys and girls athletic programs at Winter Park High School swept the Class 6A Florida High School Athletic Association Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards for the 2009-10 school year.

It’s too early to tell just how much will change with the Orlando Magic entering the 2010-2011 season. While dwelling on what could have been, decisions will soon be made when it comes to roster spots and how best to open the new Amway Center later this year.

Earlier today the Magic organization took to the streets of Orlando to thank fans for another season of support. Magic Chief Operating Officer Alex Martins and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer addressed fans in front of City Hall. The entire Magic front office staff, community ambassadors Nick Anderson and Bo Outlaw, STUFF the Magic Mascot and the Orlando Magic Dancers were all part of the thanksgiving efforts. Fans were treated to drinks, donuts and a number of other giveaways.

The Orlando Magic finished the 2009-10 season with it’s second straight appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals before losing in six games.

Point guard Jameer Nelson led the team in scoring this postseason with 19 points per game on 48-percent shooting from the field. He also led the team in assists (4.8 per game) while averaging 3.6 rebounds and one steal per contest.

Center Dwight Howard averaged 18.1 points (61-percent shooting), 11.1 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots per game.

The most magical week in sports is returning to Orlando for the second time, as the city has been selected to host NBA All-Star 2012 at the new Amway Center. Orlando last hosted the game in 1992 when Magic Johnson was named MVP.

(This is an edited version of the official release from the Orlando Magic)

The most magical week in sports is returning to Orlando for the second time, as the city has been selected to host NBA All-Star 2012 at the new Amway Center. Orlando Magic President Bob Vander Weide, Magic Chief Operating Officer Alex Martins and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer joined NBA Commissioner David Stern downtown on Tuesday to make the official announcement.

David Stern (Photo by J.C. Carnahan)

Orlando also hosted the 1992 All-Star Game.

The 61st NBA All-Star Game will be played on Sunday, Feb. 26 following a weekend of events featuring the Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam on Friday, Feb. 24 and NBA All-Star Saturday Night which consists of Shooting Stars, Skills Challenge, Three-Point Contest and the Slam Dunk Contest. The NBA All-Star Jam Session and interactive basketball celebration will be held at the Orange County Convention Center, where fans will have the chance to meet and collect free autographs from NBA players and legends.

The 2011-12 season will mark the 28th year that Turner Sports will provide NBA All-Star coverage, and the 10th consecutive year the All-Star Game will be televised in primetime on TNT. The All-Star Game will be seen by a worldwide television audience in more than 200 countries and territories and in more than 40 languages.

During NBA All-Star 2012, the NBA will continue to celebrate its tradition and commitment to social responsibility with a schedule of NBA Cares events. NBA Cares will partner with schools, government, and local nonprofit organizations in Orlando and surrounding areas to highlight the league’s grassroots and community initiatives that reach millions of young people and their parents while providing critical resources to community-based programs.

– Remember When? –

Few All-Star Games have rivaled the one Orlando hosted in 1992 in which the West defeated the East, 153-113, at Orlando Arena. The game is best remembered for the return of Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson, who had retired in November 1991 after contracting HIV.

By the time the final buzzer sounded on that game, Johnson had gone one-on-one with both Isiah Thomas and Michael Jordan, and turned in a vintage performance by recording game highs of 25 points and nine assists to win his second All-Star MVP award. Golden State guard Tim Hardaway, who had allowed Johnson to replace him in the starting lineup, contributed 14 points and seven assists.

Hard to believe it’s been more than a week since brooms were being raised by locals – many of whom don’t watch hoops to begin with – in between high-fives at sports bars throughout town following the Orlando Magic’s Game 4 win over Charlotte last Monday.

Hard to believe it’s been more than a week since brooms were being raised by local basketball fans – many of whom don’t usually watch the sport to begin with – in between high-fives at sports bars throughout town following the Orlando Magic’s Game 4 win over the Charlotte Bobcats last Monday.

But that’s the power of sports in an otherwise sleepy tourist town.

The Magic get back at it on Tuesday at Amway Arena for the opening game of the second round against the visiting Atlanta Hawks, with Game 2 to follow here at home on Thursday.

Games 4-5 in Atlanta go down this Saturday and Sunday. So plan your drinking engagements accordingly.

Even if you don’t choose to booze, being out and about amongst front-running playoff fans can be as entertaining as being bogged down with those media types who cheer for the home team in the press box. It’s all so amusing in its own unique way.

While newspapers debate the future MVP potential of Dwight Howard and disregard the obvious MVP-caliber credentials of Cleveland’s LeBron James, I’m just hoping the end result in the NBA postseason doesn’t come down to referees dictating the outcome of the league’s next champion.

Like many of us, I confess to not giving much of a damn about the complaining of bad calls that take place throughout sports. It’s been going on now for so long that it’ll never change.

In order to win through obstacles such as this, you’ve just got to be sure to beat both the opponent and the system at the same time. Just in case.

Dwight already knows he needs to adjust his game to appease the posse of David Stern as they call games. He’s heard it from coaches and teammates, from players-turned-commentators, from opinionated hometown fans, and he’s likely read about it every other day as well.

Howard arguing with NBA refs is like the rest of us trying to argue with a cop that just pulled us over, or with a judge on a court date. It’s nothing but downhill from there. You’ve just got to be a little smarter about it.

But to be honest, it does feel as though the basketball world is rooting against Orlando.

The locals sense it, too. Maybe that’s why every time Charlotte owner Michael Jordan was seen on the tube, through the haze of cigarette smoke spewing from carousers at the not-so-sporty pub I found myself at for Game 4, he was badgered and cursed until something else grabbed the spectators attention.

More high-fives and pint glasses to go around with music on full blast. No reason to listen to announcers provide any amount of clarity regarding some of the calls coming down on Howard. Who needs an explanation anyway? Cue more cursing at the TV.

And I must say, there was nothing more annoying then hearing “sweep, sweep, sweep, get out the brooms, it’s a sweep!” over and over again during and after that game. How cliché. Especially since it came against the first-time playoff-qualifying Bobcats, of all teams.

It was just a year ago at this time that Cleveland fans were giddy over a similar triumph. In fact they swept both Detroit and Atlanta last year. A lot of good that did the Cavaliers back then as the battle-tested Magic derailed their title dreams in the conference finals.

So now it’s on to the next one for Orlando. Finally. An entire week later. Make sure there are plenty of drinks to go around.

The franchises only home over its first 21 seasons will be boarded up once the team moves into the luxurious Amway Center next season. The time for remembrance is already underway as the greatest moments in Amway Arena history are being celebrated through next week’s regular season finale on Wednesday against Philadelphia at 8 p.m.

The tribute began this past Wednesday against Washington as fans received a commemorative poster highlighting different events that have come through the arena over the years.

On Friday (April 9) the team will give away another commemorative poster – to the first 3,000 fans in attendance – celebrating the best NBA/Magic moments in Amway Arena. Tip-off against New York is set for 7 p.m. with video highlights to be shown throughout the night.

Further respect is being shown at the team’s official site where a separate page honoring the Magic’s original home has been created at OrlandoMagic.com.

The Magic currently site at 55-23 with the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference after winning the Southeast Division title. It’s the sixth time the team has won at least 50 games in a season and the third year in a row they managed to do so while under the guidance of head coach Stan Van Gundy.

Along with games against the Knicks and 76ers, Orlando travels to No. 1 Cleveland (61-18) on Sunday at 1 p.m. and Indiana (30-48) on Monday at 7 p.m.

With the inaugural Arena Football One (AF1) season just two months away, the Orlando Predators are hosting open tryouts outside the Citrus Bowl at Thunder Field this Saturday, Feb. 13 and again Saturday, March 6.

As in year’s past, the organization will sign at least one player to its roster from the pool of players who tried out.

Registration for both days begins at 8 a.m. with tryouts starting promptly at 9 a.m. at 1610 West Church Street. Cost for each participant is $65 in advance and $75 (cash only) the morning of workouts.

Tryouts will consist of a series of agility drills and the 40-yard dash, to be timed on natural grass. Proper footwear is required along with a kicking tee for placekickers who plan to attend.

For more information contact Jen Menzel by email at jmenzel@orlandopredators.com with “Player Tryout Registration Information” in subject line or by phone at 407-648-4444.

The first professional lacrosse team in the state of Florida is taking time off from its regular season schedule to host a one-hour youth lacrosse clinic at Amway Arena on Saturday, Feb. 20.

The clinic, as part of the Titans Academy of Lacrosse, is for kids between third and eighth grade. The clinic will be held from 9-10 a.m. and will focus on shooting, passing, and defensive drills taught by Titans players Casey Powell and Pat Maddalena.

Participants are asked to bring their own helmet, stick and gloves with them to the arena.

Cost of the clinic is $30 and includes a free ticket to the game between the Titans and the Boston Blazers later that night. Additional family tickets for the game will be made available for $15 if purchased during registration.

Registration can be completed by phone at 407-601-6516 or by mail with a check or money order made out to Orlando Titans and sent to 7901 Kingspointe Parkway, Suite 9, Orlando, FL 32819.

Beginning this weekend, in conjunction with the National Basketball Academy, the Orlando Magic’s youth basketball programs will be held throughout the spring with camps and clinics scheduled across Central Florida.

STUFF’s Mini Dragon Dribblers instructional sessions are for kids between kindergarten and third grade, beginning this Sunday, Feb. 14 at RDV Sportsplex from 5-6 p.m. Kids will learn the fundamentals of the game over the course of seven weeks and receive motivational and educational practice time. Kids will also receive Magic prizes, a certificate of achievement, and a ticket to a Magic home game.

The Orlando Magic Parent/Child Game-Day Clinic will be held on Sunday, March 28 from 1-3 p.m. at RDV Sportsplex. It’s a unique opportunity for a parent and child to take part in a basketball clinic before going on to attend that night’s game at Amway Arena against the Denver Nuggets. The group will be recognized on the jumbotron that night and be able to take a group photo after the game at center court.

The Orlando Magic Spring Break Camps will be held in three different locations – RDV Sportsplex (March 29-April 2 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.), Pro-Health & Fitness Center in Viera (April 5-9 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.) and Lake Mary Preparatory School (April 5-9 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.) – for kids of all skill levels between the ages of 7-16. The camps are designed to improve each participant’s game through a variety of drills and contests. Kids will receive a camp T-shirt, giveaways, prizes, awards and a ticket to a Magic home game.

Thanks to the Orlando Magic, even the most hardened competitors on the basketball court might have grown a bit misty-eyed watching the joyous smiles of kids getting presents and bicycles on what might have otherwise been a lean holiday season.

– By John Denton

Apopka’s Lee Lopez looked on from afar as his kids, 17-year-old Brandon and 6-year-old Lee Ann, playfully got involved in a snowball fight with Orlando Magic players Dwight Howard, Ryan Anderson and Brandon Bass, and Lopez summed up the joy of watching his family smile and have an all-around fun day.

“This is one of the nicest events that I’ve ever been a part of,’’ gushed Lopez, who attended a Christmas party put on by the Magic’s players and coaches for 42 families affiliated with the Apopka Family Learning Center. “This is just what it’s all about, guys like these players giving back to the community. It’s just a great gesture by them.’’

Vince Carter surprises Sonya Jarbath, age 8, with a brand new bicycle at the Magic holiday party on December 22 hosted by Magic players, coaches and basketball operations department for 42 families from the Apopka Family Learning Center. (Photo by Fernando Medina, Orlando Magic)

The Magic’s players, coaches and basketball operations staff donated approximately $30,000 to fund a party in which the 42 local families were given a large box of toys and supplies for the kids and adults. And then, just as the families thought that the Magic players had left the event, the players returned with shiny new bicycles under their arms for all of the children.

Even the most hardened competitors on the basketball court might have grown a bit misty-eyed on Tuesday watching the joyous smiles of kids getting presents and bicycles on what might have otherwise been a lean holiday season.

“We live a good lifestyle and God has blessed us with most of the things that we have ever desired materialistically. But to be able to give back to those who are a little less fortunate, it’s such a really good feeling for us,’’ said Magic guard Anthony Johnson, one of the fourth-quarter heroes of Monday’s win against the Utah Jazz. “We’re just out here trying to spread some cheer and brighten the holidays.’’

Tuesday normally would have been a day the Magic (21-7) would have been preparing for tonight’s home game against the Houston Rockets. And in years past that workout would have been followed by a team Christmas party in which players would have traded gifts among themselves.

J.J. Redick shows his painting skills at the Magic holiday party on December 22. (Photo by Fernando Medina, Orlando Magic)

But the team ultimately found something inherently wrong with that, especially in a time when so many families are in need because of the nation’s depressed economy. So an idea was born to take the money normally used on the team party and instead put it toward a party for families in need of some holiday cheer.

Magic general manager Otis Smith said nothing was budgeted for the party, so he started going around to all of the players two weeks ago for donations to fund the party. The generosity from the players and staff amazed Smith, so much so that the party even exceeded the team’s expectations, Smith said.

“I think there’s something a little off about a party where millionaires are buying gifts for other millionaires, especially when there are so many people in need,’’ said J.J. Redick, who had a bicycle under each arm during the end of the party. “I don’t think you can underestimate the impact of an act of kindness and the impact that it can have on a person. Doing stuff like this is something that we enjoy, but it’s also a necessity.’’

Redick is as well-read as any player on the Magic, and he knows the impact that the country’s recession has had on unemployment rates and home foreclosure surges in Central Florida.

The tough times have hit home for Redick, who said he’s felt a greater need than ever to try and assist the community in whatever way he can. He and Anderson took 50 youth from the Children’s Home Society on a shopping spree at Target. Each child was given a $100 gift card courtesy of the two Magic players and Redick said the event, “could not have gone any better.’’

Orlando Magic players Dwight Howard, Matt Barnes and Ryan Anderson (left to right) have a snowball fight with the kids in the parking lot of the RDV Sportsplex. The Magic holiday party on December 22. (Photo by Fernando Medina, Orlando Magic)

“Just in my case I can remember our family having five kids and my dad was unemployed one Christmas and it was a rough Christmas,’’ Redick remembered. “There are a lot of people all over the country and all over Central Florida experiencing tough times right now and anything that we can do to help is great.’’

And the entire Magic team tried to do their part on Tuesday at the party for the families from the Apopka Learning Center, a facility that helps families vital issues of education, literacy, parenting skills, health care and money management.

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy wore a Santa hat with a full beard and mustache attached to it. Mickael Pietrus drew sketches of kids and showed such a knack for it that Van Gundy complimented on his artistic touch. “So can I draw up my own play now?’’ Pietrus jokingly asked his coach.

Matt Barnes painted faces, Johnson and Jameer Nelson assisted with the decoration of stockings and Rashard Lewis helped to make snowcones. Patrick Ewing, all 7-foot-1 of him, stood at the rim with his arms outstretched and tried blocking shots as at least eight kids fired up shots at him.

And then there was Howard, Bass, Anderson and Barnes engaged in the good-natured snowball fight with icy “snow’’ provided by a machine that blew the white stuff high into the air. Quite frankly, it was difficult to tell who had more fun – the kids or the Magic’s players.

“Quite honestly, we get as much or more out of it than the families do I think. Being around all of these kids is just a lot of fun for us,’’ Van Gundy said through his snow-white Santa beard. “We’re just very fortunate to be around these great families and kids. To see all of these families come and have fun and be a part of their Christmas is really great.’’
