High school girls soccer teams enter postseason play this week as district tournaments are set to get underway across Central Florida. Freedom is hoping to bury the memory of last year.
Just as it did a year ago, the annual East-West Orange County Senior Bowl came down to the final play of the game Wednesday night. Kyle Herrera’s 34-yard field goal won it for the East 20-17.
The girls soccer team at Freedom has come a long way since the tragedy that struck a year ago, when talented teammate Bree McMahon lost her left leg following an accident at a car wash fundraiser.
For the young ballplayers who recently accepted their high school diplomas, the decision is now whether to start collegiate playing careers or join minor league baseball teams. For current underclassmen hailing from nearby, the decision is a similar one to make.
It’s already been a season to remember at Timber Creek High School. After winning in the regional playoffs for the first time since the program started, the Wolves are one game away from the state semifinals. Next up is Jacksonville Mandarin.
Call it the Clash of the District 4 Titans. That’s essentially what next week’s meeting between Timber Creek and Winter Park will be at Showalter Field on Friday, Oct. 9. The winner of that game is likely to wrap up the four-team Class 6A-4 title, leaving the loser to fend off University (2-2) and Colonial (0-4) later in the season for a spot in the playoffs.
On Friday night Freedom forced Timber Creek to prove they could throw the football as the high school season got underway at FHS. Maybe anonymity is not such a bad thing for the football program at Timber Creek High School.
