Austin Rivers ended his high school basketball career at Winter Park as a two-time Class 6A state champion on Saturday in Lakeland.

In a rematch of last year’s finale, the Wildcats won 52-44 over Dr. Phillips behind a game-high 25 points from Rivers. The Duke signee shot just 8-of-25 from the field but pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Neither team shot particularly well as Winter Park (28-5) went just 4-of-20 from beyond the arc and Dr. Phillips (27-6) finished 3-of-19 from long range. The Panthers also struggled from the free throw line, going 5-of-15 on the night.

Winter Park led by six points for much of the second half before the Panthers tied the game at 34-all with five minutes to play. Dr. Phillips closed the gap when they got a layup and free throw from Shane Larkin, followed by a 3-pointer by Isaac Lane.

The Wildcats took over from there, though, as Rivers ignited an 11-0 run with a 3-pointer of his own. Three buckets from BillyDee Williams and a tip-in by Brett Comer followed to put the Wildcats on top for good at 45-34 with two-and-a-half minutes to go.

“To repeat and get another state championship with my team, that means everything to me and our community,” Rivers said afterwards. “We’re so blessed to be here.”

Rivers entered the game averaging 28.8 points and six rebounds per game. Austin Keel scored 11 points for Winter Park. Williams added seven points.

Larkin ended his career with 10 points (4-of-13 shooting), 10 rebounds and seven assists. He entered the game averaging 19 points, 6.3 rebounds and 6.4 assists and has committed to DePaul University.

Dr. Phillips got a team-high 12 points and five rebounds from Darius Andrews.

The 3-point shot would not go down for local high school boys basketball teams on Thursday. Jones lost in overtime in the Class 3A championship game while TFA fell short in the 2A title game.

The 3-point shot would not go down for local high school boys basketball teams on Thursday at the Lakeland Center. Jones lost in overtime in the Class 3A title game while The First Academy gave up a second-half lead before losing the Class 2A championship.

Jones (25-6) lost 60-54 to Tallahassee Rickards despite a game-high 29 points on 9-of-19 shooting from senior Angelo Warner. Matt Williams finished with 12 points and seven rebounds while DeMarcus Croaker added 11 points for Jones.

The Tigers trailed for much of the night before Warner put Jones up 24-22 on a drive to the hoop with close to five minutes to play in the third quarter. The teams battled back-and-forth throughout the second half.

Warner helped Jones go up 46-39 with four minutes left in regulation, but Rickards closed out the fourth on a 9-2 run from there. A free throw by Rickards’ Jakari Bush with 1:22 remaining eventually sent the game in overtime tied at 48-all.

The Tigers quickly fell behind by six points in the extra period and never recovered. Jones knocked down only 3-of-18 tries from beyond the arc on the night. Rickards made 51-percent of its shots from the field.

In the early game, The First Academy lost 53-41 to Weston Sagemont after blowing an eight-point halftime lead.

The Royals held Sagemont to just 28-percent from the field in the first half but were outscored 38-18 in the final two quarters. TFA (25-6) gave up the lead for good with 7:44 to play when UCF signee Rod Days, Jr. hit two free throws to put Sagemont up 30-29. Days was held to just nine points on 3-of-8 shooting.

The First Academy had trouble shooting from long-range throughout, connecting on just 2-of-16 shots from three-range. The Royals were also outrebounded 42-20.

Dillon Graham led TFA with 18 points and four rebounds. Taylor Akers chipped in 12 points with four rebounds and two assists.

On Wednesday, Orlando Christian Prep’s bid at winning a fourth-straight title ended in the Class 1A semifinals, where the Warriors (24-6) lost 42-41 to West Palm Beach Summit Christian.

Three more local teams hit the hardwood today in semifinal matchups. Leesburg (26-4) takes the court first against Tampa Blake (28-2) at 2:30 p.m. in Class 4A.

In Class 6A, Dr. Phillips (26-5) faces Miramar (20-7) at 4 p.m. while Winter Park (26-5) takes on Miami Columbus (29-3) at 7 p.m. The Wildcats defeated Dr. Phillips in the state title game a year ago.

Taryn Griffey hit a free throw with 24 seconds left in overtime to help Dr. Phillips claim the Class 6A girls basketball state title on Saturday with a 58-57 win over Lake Mary at the Lakeland Center.

Freshman guard Taryn Griffey hit a free throw with 24 seconds left in overtime to help Dr. Phillips claim the Class 6A girls state basketball title on Saturday at the Lakeland Center. The Panthers hung on for a 58-57 win after holding off a late surge by Lake Mary.

“We just had to play our game at that’s what we did,” Griffey said afterwards.

The daughter of former major leaguer Ken Griffey, Jr. put Dr. Philips (31-2) ahead 51-39 with four minutes to go in regulation after taking a steal the other way for an easy layup.

The Rams (30-3) responded by closing out the quarter on a 14-2 run behind baskets from Morgan Jones, Sarah Taylor, Alexis Fitts and Peggy Smith, who hit a 3-pointer with 42 seconds remaining to tie the game. But the game-winning shot in the final seconds came up short for the Rams from atop the arc.

Lake Mary outscored Dr. Phillips 23-14 in the final period but were unable to carry that momentum over.

In overtime, Arianna Cumbie and Griffey each knocked down shots to put Dr. Phillips up by four points before Jones and Taylor tied the game up on trips to the free throw line. Following Griffey’s free throw to put the Panthers ahead for the final time, the last two shots of the game came up empty for Lake Mary.

The win gives Dr. Phillips its first state title since 1992 and the program’s second win of the season over last year’s champion.

The game was tied at 20-20 at the break. Dr. Phillips took a 39-30 lead after three quarters.

“Once we knew how to break their press and break their defense it was easy from then on,” Griffey said. She finished the game with 19 points on 8-of-15 attempts and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore Hannah Schaible grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for Dr. Phillips while classmate Sydnei McCaskill led all players with six assists. McCaskill also finished with eight points and seven rebounds. The Panthers played with just one junior and one senior throughout the season.

Jones, one of four senior starters for Lake Mary, finished with a game-high 20 points (7-of-26) and seven rebounds. She will play her college ball at Northwestern next year. Taylor finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Lake Highland came up on the wrong end of a shootout Friday as the Class 3A boys soccer state title game went to penalty kicks at the University of Tampa’s Pepin Stadium. LHP lost 9-8.

Lake Highland Prep came up on the wrong end of a shootout Friday as the Class 3A boys soccer state championship game went to penalty kicks at the University of Tampa’s Pepin Stadium.

The match took nine rounds of penalty kicks to decide. The final attempt by Torin Theilhelm sailed high over the crossbar, giving Fort Lauderdale University School a 9-8 win.

Although neither team could miss up to that point, a substitution in goal by the Highlanders was nearly enough to help them get the decision.

After the first five penalty kicks got past LHP starter Ethan Willings, Steven Sahlsten was in position to stop each of the next three attempts but was unable to do so. The University keeper was then called upon to boot in what would prove to be the winning goal.

The teams battled to a 0-0 tie after 100 minutes of play, much of which took place in the middle of the field where a stalemate unfolded. Shots on goal were few and far between.

Lake Highland saw its best chances to score come by way of inbound throws from Conner Willings. But any attempts by the Highlanders to follow up those tosses were thwarted by University.

The first real opportunity came less than 10 minutes into the first half, on a header from Michael Rasmussen that landed just off its mark. Moments later freshman Austin Fort got his foot on a loose ball inside the goal box but had that shot knocked away by the keeper.

Rasmussen nearly broke the tie with 29 minutes left in the game when he chased the ball down deep inside the box. But a shot off his left foot was blocked by the timely slide of a defender.

It was Lake Highland’s first trip to the title game after losing five times in the semifinals since 2002.

The Highlanders were the only boys soccer team to advance to the state finals last week. Port Orange Spruce Creek lost 2-1 to Miami Varela in its second trip to the Class 6A state semifinals and Celebration had its season come to a close in a 4-0 loss to Cape Coral in a Class 4A semifinal.

The girls soccer season for Winter Park’s Trinity Prep squad came to an abrupt end Thursday in the Class 2A state title game at Pepin Stadium in Tampa.

Trinity Prep, making its first appearance in the final four, fell behind early before losing 4-1 to Delray Beach American Heritage.

It was an emotional ending to an exhausting week for the team.

The Saints finished the season with a 20-2-2 overall record after defeating Tampa Prep 2-1 in the semifinals just the night before. Goals by Sydney Carroll and Harvard-commit Meg Casscells-Hamby helped Trinity pull out the come-from-behind win.

But against American Heritage, finding the net was no easy task.

“Two games back-to-back against two great teams was difficult,” said Trinity coach Joe Raymond, who was an assistant at Rollins College this past fall during the men’s NCAA Division II runners-up season.

Despite the loss, the Saints capped a season that brought together plenty of support from students, parents and faculty at Trinity Prep. Three busloads of fans made the trip down I-4 and tailgated before each game.

The turnout made for plenty of surreal moments for Raymond, who has seen his share of soccer over the years as both a player and coach.

“The end result was secondary to the overall experience,” Raymond said. “There were tears afterwards, but they were more about realizing that it’s the end of the season.”

Also seeing their seasons come to a disappointing end on Thursday were Harmony and Lake Highland Prep. Harmony dropped its Class 4A semifinal game 1-0 to Steinbrenner, while LHP lost on penalty kicks (3-1) to St. Pete Catholic following a scoreless regulation and two overtime periods.

On Friday, Trinity Prep’s girls soccer team earned a spot in the state semifinals for the first time in program history with a 2-1 win over Orange Park St. Johns Country Day.

The Saints (19-2-2) got a goal from senior Mary Jane Simms with seven minutes to play to help give Trinity the region title. They move on to face Tampa Prep in the Class 2A semis in Tampa on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m.

Simms scored the game-winning goal after getting a pass over the middle of the penalty box from senior Meg Casscells-Hamby, who dribbled her way past the St. Johns backfield to set up the score.

Once time ran out, Trinity’s student section spilled onto the field and a water cooler was dumped on head coach Joe Raymond.

“It’s unbelievable,” Raymond said afterwards. “We came out from the beginning of the season with a goal of trying to go to states and we did it.”

Senior Kate Kniel scored on a header just seven minutes into the match to put the Saints up early. The goal came after Jamie Craig took a shot from the left side of the box which bounced off the crossbar.

St. Johns (18-4) tied the match with 24 minutes remaining off a corner kick when Annie Bobbitt emerged from a crowded goal box to head in the equalizer. It was the first goal allowed by Trinity Prep this postseason.

Three other local girls soccer teams punched tickets to state semifinal games following decisive wins on Friday.

Oviedo (20-3-1) defeated Spruce Creek 4-1 in Class 6A and will face Miami Palmetto on Friday at 3 p.m., while Harmony (18-1) disposed of Wesley Chapel Wiregrass Ranch 4-0 in Class 4A to advance against Lutz Steinbrenner on Thursday at 5:15 p.m.

Lake Highland Prep (20-4-2) won 4-2 over Ocala Trinity Catholic in Class 3A, and will play St. Petersburg Catholic on Thursday at 12:45 p.m.

High school girls soccer teams enter postseason play this week as district tournaments are set to get underway across Central Florida. Freedom is hoping to bury the memory of last year.

High school girls soccer teams enter postseason play this week as district tournaments are set to get underway across Central Florida.

Among the tournament hosts in Class 6A are Apopka, Lake Mary and Freedom, a team hoping to bury the memory of a lopsided title-game loss last year against Timber Creek.

The revamped Patriots should be a little more prepared this time around, though.

Despite fielding a relatively young team, top-seeded Freedom finished the regular season 16-2-1 overall and unbeaten in District 4. That included wins over Winter Park and Timber Creek, the second and third seeds in the event this week, and a tie against University. Freedom’s only losses came against Bishop Moore and Apopka.

Junior Soraya “YaYa” Martinez entered the last two games of the season with a team-high 16 goals and 10 assists, while sophomore Mora Johnson had contributed 14 goals and 11 assists for the Pats. Freshman midfielders Victoria Covas and Nicole Doolittle have evolved into the other big scoring threats.

Junior Dani Gomez and freshman goalkeeper Zoe Myatt anchor the defense of a team mature beyond its age.

“They’ve worked very hard towards bringing home a district title,” Freedom coach Bobby Sauer said. “Our older girls have pushed their younger teammates all year in practice and they’ve really picked up the pace. It’s invaluable to have that.”

It was just a year back that the Patriots capped off the best season in program history. They had qualified for regionals for the first time. There was a sense that they’d finally arrived. Then they lost to Oviedo in the opening round of the state tournament.

There’s not a returning player that’s forgotten how that felt. And there’s not a new teammate that hasn’t heard all about it.

But can they parlay a successful regular season into some tournament success?

“Districts is a whole new ballgame,” Sauer said of the postseason. “They’re going to have to really step up.”

The top-two teams in each district tournament advances to the regional round next week.

The surprise start to the boys basketball season for little-known International Community School of Maitland came to a halt Monday night.

One year removed from winning its first-ever district tournament game and finishing with a 13-12 record, International Community opened 2010-11 on a 12-game winning streak.

That came to an end against visiting Lake Mary Prep, who jumped out to an 18-9 lead after the opening quarter and won 77-57. International Community has yet to earn a win against LMP.

But there are signs that the Class 1A program is getting closer to competing in District 5 after gutting out wins over Halifax Academy (58-56 on Dec. 3) and Lighthouse Christian (55-52 on Jan. 7). They will be further tested next week against Calvary Christian and Trinity Christian.

“We’ve won against some better teams with more talent, but these kids continue to play hard,” International Community coach Lewis Alderman said of his squad.

The team features nine juniors and one senior, many of which have been playing together since fourth grade. And although there is no real threat for the team down low in the post, International Community has relied on the 3-point shot and defensive toughness thus far.

International Community (12-1) is averaging 63.8 points per game while allowing just 52.6 to opposing teams.

They have been led by junior power forward Jonathan Kreidt (16.5 points, 8.9 rebounds), senior guard Raphael Crump (14.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2.5 steals) and junior small forward Seth Greek (14.2 points, 6.8 rebounds).
