It wasn’t easy, but the Oviedo High School girls soccer team finally won its first state title in program history on Saturday, defeating Vero Beach 3-2 on penalty kicks at the University of Tampa.

On Thursday UCF returned to Orlando, where a miraculous half-court shot at the buzzer by Gevenia Carter gave the Knights a 68-65 win over UTEP. “Yeah, I thought it was good,” Carter said afterwards.

Three former UCF football players – Josh Sitton, Atari Bigby and Michael Greco – will continue their pursuit of the Vince Lombardi Trophy on Sunday with the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV.

Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard was named the starting center (for the fourth time) for the NBA All-Star game on Thursday. The game will be played at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Feb. 20.

When you are granted the kind of opportunity Avalon Middle School 8th-grader Tanner Hearn recently was, you do all you can to enjoy it. Hearn recently played in the Eastbay Youth All-American Game.

On Monday afternoon Dwight Howard was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week. By Monday night the Magic had its four-game winning streak snapped in a 103-96 loss to the Pistons.

It’s been an average start to the season for the UCF women’s basketball team. But a win on the road Thursday gave head coach Joi Williams No. 100 for her career. UCF is now 8-6 on the year.

Local high school boys basketball coach Ed Kershner became the all-time wins leader in Florida hoop’s history Wednesday when Oviedo defeated Trinity Prep. Kershner is now 761-329 overall.

MVP Latavius Murray scored his 11th touchdown of the season to give UCF a come-from-behind win over Georgia in the Liberty Bowl. Murray rushed for 104 yards on 18 carries.

Jarvis Williams caught six passes for 77 yards and a touchdown and James Washington rushed for 62 yards on 18 carries in a 23-7 win for N.C. State over West Virginia at the Champs Sports Bowl.
