UCF’s Beau Taylor named C-USA Hitter of Week

As a freshman on the UCF Knights baseball team in 2009, catcher Beau Taylor averaged .335 at the plate on 55 hits and led Conference USA by throwing out 26 base runners to help earn Freshman All-American honors.

It’s of little surprise then that Taylor would pick up where he left off a season ago in leading the Knights to three season-opening wins past visiting Savannah State over the weekend.

While batting in the four-spot in UCF’s lineup he went 8-for-12 (.667) with two home runs, five runs scored and five RBI in the sweep. He then was named C-USA Baseball Hitter of the Week for the first time in his young collegiate career.

Taylor totaled 14 bases in all while also throwing out two base runners. In turn, UCF won 7-2 on opening day then won 14-4 and 8-6 to conclude the weekend. Also coming up big at the plate in the wins were Chris Duffy (.600), Austin Johnston (.556) and Jonathan Griffin (.500).

The Knights play at No. 5 Florida (3-0) on Wednesday (Feb. 24) at 6:30 p.m. before returning home this weekend (Feb. 26-28) for a three-game series with Siena. The Gators lead the all-time series 19-12.

UCF will then play its first 10 games of March at Jay Bergman Field against Duquesne (Mar. 2), North Florida (Mar. 3), Central Michigan (Mar. 5-7), Miami (Mar. 9), Hartford (Mar. 12-14) and USF (Mar. 16).
