UCF women’s golf wins first tourney since 2002

Carolin Pinegger

A pair of top-10 individual finishes helped the UCF women’s golf team earn its first tournament win since 2002 as the Knights took the team title on Tuesday at the Hurricane Invitational.

Freshmen Carolin Pinegger and Valentina Fontaine tied for seventh overall (out of 90 golfers) with a 7-over (223) score over three rounds at the par-72 (6,199 yards) Don Shula Golf Resort in Miami Lakes, Florida.

Pinegger’s first top-10 effort of her young career earned her Conference USA Female Golfer of the Week honors after shooting a team-best 3-under par (69) in the final round which helped lead the Knights to victory.

Fontaine has now finished in the top-10 three times in five collegiate events. She went for par on Monday after shooting 75 on Sunday and had previously earned a C-USA weekly honor after placing second in the FIU/Pat Bradley invitational in October.

After a sluggish start with a round of 80 to open tournament play on Sunday, Pinegger shot a 74 on Monday before eventually breaking par and closing out the match with a birdie on the 18th hole. Her round of 69 on the final day tied for the lowest score at the tournament.

That final round helped give the Knights a one-shot lead over Georgia State (31-over) with a total score of 894 and a two-stroke advantage over East Tennessee State (32-over) in the standings. San Diego State (36-over) and Coastal Carolina (38-over) rounded out the top-5.

Among the other UCF finishers for first-year head coach Courtney Trimble were junior Katie Detlefsen (20th overall) with a 228 (12-over); senior Victoria Tomko (34th overall) with a 230 (14-over); and sophomore Elisa Aoki (41st overall) with a 232 (16-over).

The final overall score for UCF at the Hurricane Invitational is now the second-best tournament mark in program history, behind the 889 turned in at the Lady Pirate Invitational in Greenville, N.C. in the fall of 2006.

UCF will be back on the links March 1-2 at the annual UCF Challenge at RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento.
