By J.C. CARNAHAN | February 9th, 2010 | Category: On the Court, Orlando Magic, – RECENT POSTS | 2 commentsGuess who’s getting the ship turned around in the right direction heading into NBA All-Star weekend? That’s right, the Orlando Magic appear to have regrouped after a tough slide last month, when many wondered what was wrong with Dwight Howard and the home team.
While many have stepped up to contribute as of late, Dwight Howard has been dominating the competition.
Because of that, the Magic have now posted wins in nine of its past 11 games since Jan. 20, when Howard went for 32 points, 11 rebounds and four steals, and Matt Barnes scored 10 points with 16 rebounds, in a 109-98 win over Indiana.
- Jan. 22 – Howard goes for 19 points, 15 rebounds, three steals and two blocks while Jameer Nelson dishes out seven assists and Marcin Gortat grabs eight boards and blocks four shots in a 100-84 win over Sacramento.
- Jan. 23 – Nelson and Vince Carter go for 21 points while Howard is held to 10 points with 20 rebounds and seven blocks to his credit in a 106-95 overtime win at Charlotte. Nelson also finished with seven assists. Rashard Lewis scored 18 points and dished out six assists with five rebounds.
- Jan. 25 – Despite 27 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots from Howard, the Magic lose 99-94 at Memphis. Lewis scored 19 points and had five rebounds.
- Jan. 28 – Lewis led the team in scoring with 23 points and finished with eight rebounds while Howard had 19 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots in Orlando’s 96-94 win at home against Boston. Gortat blocked three shots and had eight rebounds.
- Jan. 30 – In a battle for the Southeast Division lead, Howard scored 31 points, grabbed 19 rebounds and blocked three shots in a 104-86 win over Atlanta. J.J. Redick had seven assists to go along with eight points as Lewis finished with 17 points and Ryan Anderson with 16 points.
- Jan. 31 – With a 91-86 win on the road at Detroit, Magic coach Stan Van Gundy and his staff earned a spot in the all-star game as coaches of the Eastern Conference. Redick scored 17 points to lead Orlando as Howard dropped 16 points with 15 rebounds and five blocked shots. Lewis scored 15 points with seven rebounds and four assists as Mickael Pietrus added 14 points.
- Feb. 2 – With January in the rearview mirror, Howard scored 22 points with 11 rebounds and five blocks in a 99-82 win over Milwaukee. Carter scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished seven assists in the win while Jason Williams scores 11 points and finishes with five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
- Feb. 5 – Carter’s 21 points and the 20 points, 18 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals from Howard were not enough for the Magic in a 92-91 loss at home against Washington.
- Feb. 7 – For the second time during this stretch the Magic met up with Boston, this time on the road, and came away with a 96-89 win. Carter scored 20 points and Howard finished with 16 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks. Nelson had 15 points and Lewis ended up with 14 points on the night.
- Feb. 8 – Not since 2005 has Carter lit up the scoreboard the way he did Monday night in Orlando. Carter capped off the Magic’s 123-117 win over New Orleans with 48 points on 6-of-10 shots from long distance and seven rebounds. Howard had 25 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks while Nelson had 10 assists.
The Magic (35-17, 2nd in East) will be on the road at Chicago (24-25, 6th in East) on Wednesday before playing at Cleveland (41-11, 1st in East) on Thursday with all-star weekend due up next. They’ll return to action with a three-game stretch at home against Detroit (Wednesday, Feb. 17), Dallas (Friday, Feb. 19) and Cleveland (Sunday, Feb 21).
