Timber Creek keeps season alive with district win

Timber Creek took the lead for good on Friday night when Cameron Smith bulldozed his way to the goal line on a 10-yard run. The Wolves then eventually got the 20-14 win when they held on down the stretch at home against Colonial.

Before Smith was able to help put the Wolves up 13-7 following the opening drive of the second half, Timber Creek running back Isiah Bolden was lost for the night after breaking the 100-yard mark on the first play of the third quarter. He finished with 113 yards on just seven carries. TCHS (4-3, 1-1 in 6A-4) then turned to a host of backs including Smith (14 rushes for 64 yards), Joe Haas (4 for 27 yards), Matt McCrary (6 for 24 yards) and Corey Russo (2 for 17 yards) to help accumulate 262 yards on the ground (7 yards per carry) and get past CHS (1-7, 1-1).

Smith also intercepted a pass just before the start of the fourth quarter, as did Matt Jones in the final minute of the game while the Grenadiers were looking to put together a scoring drive for the second time inside the final three minutes.

Hauling in big passes from Tyler Marincov, who ran in a 1-yard touchdown late in the third quarter and finished 6 of 10 for 113 yards, were McCrary (1 for 22 yards), Jalil Byrd (2 for 47 yards) and Kyle Plaugher (3 for 44 yards). Byrd recovered a fumble in the end zone for Timber Creek’s first score of the night. Grant Veve also recovered a fumble for the Wolves.

Along with big defensive plays made by Jones (7 tackles) and Smith (5 tackles) it was Todd Heisman (6 tackles), Christian Marreo (3 tackles), Colin Brown (8 tackles), Jacob Wainwright (9 tackles) and Jacob Warren (10 tackles), among others, turning in big hits or tackles-for-loss in the win.

For Colonial it was Sean Brown and Chad Tajadeen making big tackles and Ricky Gordon picking off a TCHS pass. Gordon and Jermaine Broomfield handled the load from out of the backfield for the Grenadiers.

Also catching passes from Castro was Diante Harrison, who pulled the Grenadiers within six points when he took a pass and made his way into the end zone from 17 yards out with 2:50 to go.
